Chapter 191: The Prisoner (Part-2)

“What…?” Nina frowns deeply, anger filling her voice. “They are lying, of course! Your guards took my egg just minutes ago!”

“Don’t accuse my fellow mates, Harpy,” the guard says coolly. “I trust their words more than I trust yours.”

“I don’t care whom you trust! Give me my egg back!” Nina shouts, grabbing the rails of her wooden cage and shaking them violently.

Shit, the guard seems nice enough, but I don’t think it would be wise to threaten him and piss him off. He’s in control here, after all.

“Calm down, Nina. Let me talk to him. I am sure we can find out what’s going on,” I tell Nina.

She looks at me, and the anger in her eyes subsides a little. She gives me a shaky little nod before glaring back at the guard.

“I am sorry, but did you ask everyone?” I ask the guard. “Maybe someone other than the people you talked to took the egg?”

“You can see how empty this place is,” the guard answers, calming down as well. “Not many guards have been deployed here in the last few days. You saw the two guys standing outside when we came in? They’re the only ones here excluding me.”

Fuck. I don’t think Nina is lying, but how am I going to convince this guy that his colleagues might be?

“Listen, judging by the look on the Harpy’s face, I don’t actually think she’s lying, okay?” The guard continues. “But the guys outside are my friends as well. They wouldn’t give a false report over such a small thing.

“So, how about this: we have surveillance orbs around the whole place. I will go and check the footage just to make sure.”

“Oh, that would be great. Thank you,” I reply gratefully. This solves the problem.

Once again, the guard leaves Nina and me alone and disappears inside one of the tents.

“See? Nothing to worry about, Nina. I am sure we will get the egg back soon enough,” I assure her with a smile.

“Y-Yeah.”

But I am not completely calm either. I am anxious and excited at the same time. I do care about Nina getting her egg back, and I’m sure she will, but it now means something much bigger to me.

This could potentially help Layla! One of my biggest worries right now is the problem with Layla’s system. She has little time left before her system runs out of life points. After Queen Illsevel warned her about it and recommended getting a permanent solution, that is, getting pregnant, we’ve been trying for it every day multiple times.

But that’s the common thing with pregnancy. It happens when you least expect it or don’t want it, but when you actively try for it, it keeps eluding you.

And I really don’t want to risk Layla’s life on chance if I can help it. What if she doesn’t get pregnant before the time’s up? No way I’m letting her die!

One of the possible solutions I thought of was for Layla to just adopt a child, but that’s impossible with how little time we have left. The whole process takes way too long.

But with Nina, I already have a child! And she is reluctant to say it to me, but she clearly wants me to be a part of the child’s life. And through me, Layla can also be a part of it! Both Nina and she can take care of the child!

Doesn’t that solve everything!?

[It might, but are you sure about this, buddy? It will be a huge responsibility for you to bear as well…]

I would have to bear that responsibility regardless. It’s either this or getting Layla pregnant. And I was already feeling very conflicted about rejecting Nina. This is a solution that makes everyone happy.

[True… if it helps Layla to survive, I guess we have to take this approach.]

It’s settled then. Though I will talk with Layla first to confirm if this would even work.

“He’s back!” Nina says desperately.

The guard steps out of the tent, walking towards us with a confused look on his face.

“What happened? Did you find who took the egg?” I ask the guard as he stops in front of us.

“Eh… yeah. The harpy wasn’t lying,” the guard confirms, scratching his head. “She did have a box with her, and someone did take it from her. Two people, in fact. The problem is, I have no clue who either of them is. They are definitely not the other guards, though”

“… what?” Nina whispers, sinking down to the floor as her legs refuse to support her weight.

“What do you mean you don’t know who they are? How can some random people enter this place, snatch Nina’s egg, and leave without anyone knowing?” I ask in disbelief.

“I told you; this is just a containment facility for monsters and half-monsters. The security here is pretty lax even during normal operation, much less now. It has only been me guarding the inner area for the last few days, and I went out to fetch you when this happened,” the guard explains, sounding apologetic.

“Did you at least see the people who took it?” I ask.

“No, they didn’t!” Nina shouts. She is crying now and is in full panic mode. “They were hiding their faces!”

“It’s as she says,” the guard confirms.

“But why would two random elves steal Nina’s egg in such a way?” I ask, confused. It

“I have no clue. It’s not like Harpy eggs are coveted among us,” the guard answers with a frown. “But don’t worry, it is a mistake on our part, and we will investigate this properly to help you get the egg back.”

Even with the guard’s assurance, I don’t feel very optimistic about their investigation. And by the looks of it, neither does Nina.

“Let me out!” Nina shouts at the guard. “I will look for those thieves myself! I can chase the scent of my child!”

“I can let you out, but you won’t be able to look for the egg yourself,” the guard answers. “Those thieves probably went into the city. And I cannot let you go inside.”

The look on Nina’s face is so mutinous and full of rage that I speak up before she can say something she shouldn’t. I cannot let her get into trouble now.

“Is there no way she can be let inside the city?” I ask.

“I mean, there is a way. But there will be paperwork involved, and you will have to take full responsibility for her,” he tells me. “In case she disturbs the peace of the city, you will be held equally liable. Also, she still won’t be allowed to roam free. You will always have to accompany her outside of your place of residence, that is, your room.”

“Then do the paperwork,” I tell him immediately. “Because we need to find the egg no matter what.”
